The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) – Newcastle Hunter 2019 Race Day, held on Saturday, 4 May at Newcastle Racecourse raised $92,000 for children’s charities Variety – the Children’s Charity and Hunter Children’s Research Foundation.
While Variety, a long-time partner of AHA Newcastle Hunter, was the recipient of $66,000 raised on the day, Hunter Children’s Research Foundation was a first-time beneficiary of the event.
Organisation spokesperson Lorraine Gardner said the money would be used to help fund the work of one of the organisation’s dedicated Hunter-based medical researchers in the area of childhood illness.
“We were thrilled to be part of such an amazing day and to be the recipients of $26,000 for our organisation,” she said.
“AHA does an incredible job of supporting organisations such as ours within the local community and we hope to continue our relationship into the future.”

In previous years, money raised for Variety has acted as seed-funding for the annual NSW Variety Bash and 2019 will be no exception.
Last year the support of AHA meant our Variety Bash was able to raise more than $1 million for children and families in rural NSW experiencing illness and hardship.

Held for the first time in the Newcastle Racecourse marquee, the day hosted more than 300 guests, sponsors and VIPs.
AHA Newcastle Hunter spokesperson Nikki Taylor said overall the day was an incredible success thanks to the support of industry sponsors including Starr Facility Services, Treasury Wine Estate, Reward Hospitality Comcater, SENPOS, AJ Gallagher, Lion, DFK Crosbie, Bidfood and everyone who came along on the day.
“We are so very fortunate every year to secure the support and generosity not only of those within AHA itself, but also of our industry partners,” she said.
“We also want to thank our AHA CEO John Whelan for getting the day started with an incredibly generous donation of $10,000 which set the mood for digging deep and really getting behind two organisations which do so much for children in need.”
