Built from the ground up and designed for families, the new-look Maryland Tavern is the latest Hunter-based offering by Marvan Hotels.

Completed earlier this year, the rebuilt venue can seat up to 200 customers in the bistro, has two bars, two beer gardens, a wood-fire pizza oven, 32 taps with 20 different beer varieties, and a revolutionary kid’s play area.

The innovative architectural design, provided by North Sydney-based architects Bergstrom Architects and Central Coast-based builders Collaborative Construction, combined with a warm earthy décor provides a light industrial feel, peppered with rich wood panelling, contemporary copper tapware, and sumptuous leather seating.

According to owners, the strategy was to provide a destination venue for both families in surrounding areas and to capture a wider audience by providing a pub that locals can be proud of.

“With the local area growing and more families calling Maryland, Fletcher and Wallsend home, it was important to design a venue with the needs of families and children in mind,” a spokesperson for the Marvan management team said.

The $13 million project took eight months to complete and includes several entertainment areas including a dedicated sports bar with a TV art vision wall and continuous selection of sports shown on 100-inch screens.

Children will also love visiting the venue with Mum and Dad thanks to the inclusion of a dedicated kid’s area complete with several digital game screens and a BEAM interactive projector.

A quality food offering was also high on the list of priorities and executive chef Maurizio Pocino has certainly delivered, providing a diverse menu including pizzas created in an Italian-made Valoriani wood-fired pizza oven.

While the menu offers all the pub favorites, some of the stand-out items include Jamaican Jerk Chicken served with braised lentils, tomato, red onions, potato coriander salsa salad, and pineapple yoghurt, Slow-Cooked 700g Lamb Shoulder for two served with cucumber, mint, labna, dukkah, and focaccia, and Squid Ink Linguine with Shark Bay blue manna crab, garlic, chilli, cherry tomato, basil, evoo.

“Providing the area with a quality product was always going to be a tough transition as the previous model loaned itself being more about value than quality,” a spokesperson for the Marvan management team said.

“The new model is all about quality of product. The price point is something we are working on every day, striving to achieve the right formula for the best outcome.”

Community is also at the heart of the Marvan Group’s plans with a sponsorship of the Newcastle Knights NRLW its newest partnership.

“Our Knights partnership is a huge step forward for Marvan Hotels and we believe it is the right step, inclusive of the tavern, to build the reputation of each local venue as a proud supporter of Newcastle,” a spokesperson for the Marvan management team said.

The venue also sponsors a number of local sporting organisations including Maryland Golf Club and local fishing and cricket clubs.

Since opening on 8 February 2023, the venue has also held its inaugural Women’s Day Lunch attended by the Newcastle Knights NRLW players, along with women from the local community, women in business, Marvan business partners, and hotel staff.

The event focused on the importance of women in sport, the challenges faced, and how to work together to create a more inclusive sporting community.

The Maryland Tavern is part of Marvan Hotels and is owned by publicans Marcus and Vanessa Levy, Stephen Harband, and Adam Taylor.
