At the end of the month, Lambton Park Hotel will celebrate Christmas in July with the Karuah Aboriginal community set to receive a very generous gift.

Hotel licensee, Michael Millett said since starting at the Lambton Park Hotel two years ago, local community support initiatives have been high on his list of priorities and are an integral part of the pub’s commitment to giving back.

“So far we have been supporting Variety- the Children’s Charity, and Karuah Mission our weekly raffles and other initiatives,” Millett said.

“Karuah is not a local area, but I first heard about the Karuah Mission because of an over-18s basketball team that comes down to Newcastle to play on weekends,” he said.

“It got me thinking and after talking to Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council CEO, Shai Richardson I began to learn a lot about the area and local Aboriginal community.

“Through those conversations it was clear to me that living and growing up on the mission brings a great sense of community and strong connection to culture for the Karuah people, however, with a significant lack of funds and support some resources are scarce.”

Millett said the hotel’s Christmas in July event would aim to raise funds for objectives high on the mission’s list of community needs, including a new office and support for an educational facility where people of the community learn various trades including landscaping which has allowed them to build a community garden that provides fresh produce, fruits, and vegetables.

“The community believes in being self-sustaining to empower members and allow the strengthening and continuation of Aboriginal culture,” he said.

“Next on the agenda for them is a medical centre, so community members can access the medical care they need, including; psychology, counselling, general medical, and dental without a need to travel.”

The Lambton Park Hotel’s Christmas in July event will be held at the pub on Saturday, 30 July and includes a mega raffle of prizes generously donated by local businesses. All proceeds of the event will go to the Karuah Aboriginal Mission.
