The Blackbutt Hotel - celebrating and supporting local women

Updated: Apr 17, 2018

Blackbutt Hotel operator Fiona O' Connor will host the Women Celebrating Women fundraiser on Thursday, 3 May to raise money for victims of domestic violence.

Women celebrating women.

That is the foundation for an annual fundraiser to be held at The Blackbutt Hotel on Thursday, 3 May.

Hotel operator and event organiser Fiona O' Connor, said she created the Women Celebrating Women event eight years ago after noticing a number of hotel fundraisers' were based around sports or more masculine themes.

"After being involved in the hospitality industry, specifically The Blackbutt since 2001, I noticed that a lot of local fundraisers were golf days and sportsmen's luncheons. There wasn’t much specifically designed for women," she said.

"I know that women love to give back too, and they are also inclined to a night out for food and socialising, so I thought why not combine it all into a women’s charity dinner?"

According to Fiona, the format of the dinner includes a female audience, a local charity recipient, and co-incidental food and fun.

"Over the past eight years, the annual women’s dinners have raised more $60,000 for a number of charities," Fiona said.

"Two have been abroad, the Hamlin fistula and a school in Africa where we were able to build play equipment, and the rest have been for local charities like The Nicholas Trust, Jenny’s Place and Novo for women and children. For Novo our funds paid for a specific program for victims of domestic violence to have training to aid them with returning to the workforce.

"Ultimately the annual women’s dinner is one of the many ways our hotel ‘gives back’ and I feel it’s also an important way of displaying that hotels care, are responsible, and play and important role in any community."

This year all proceeds from the event will go to Survivors R' Us Incorporated, a local start-up non-profit organisation aimed at providing support for victims of domestic violence.

The night will include dinner, wine for the table, sparking wine and canapes on arrival, a charity balloon raffle with shopping vouchers, pamper sessions and hampers, a fundraising lolly bar and take-home gift bag.

Tickets are $85 and available now from the hotel.
